The other driver was killed instantly and Perry was badly injured, she was rushed to hospital but there was nothing doctors could do to reverse the terminal brain damage and internal bleeding.
Police don't think drugs or alcohol were factors in the fatal crash. Followers of Katy Perry on Twitter have been suggesting that she was Tweeting while driving, and the distraction lead to the fatal accident.
Perry was the only artist to spend over 52 consecutive weeks in the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100. Perry was nominated for eight Grammy Awards. She was named 2011's "Artist of the Year" by MTV. She has sold 37.6 million digital tracks in the United States and 11 million albums worldwide.
Katy Perry was loved by many fans around the world, she will be remembered as one of the most important singers of the last century. Thousands of fans have expressed their shock and grief on social networking websites such as Twitter, with famous people contributing and offering support to the friends and family as well. Lifelong friend Lauren Christy Tweeted 'I can't believe she is really gone...they wuz an inspiration'. Katy Perry was 27 years old.
